| My name is Larry Hambrick. I live in San Angelo, Texas. In the mid 80's,
I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. For most of my life, I had been very healthy and active.
I worked in construction and as a homebuilder for years, and I was also very involved at home and church.
However, Parkinson's brought on some real changes. I began to find it impossible to maintain my normal schedule or lifestyle. But one of my greatest challenges came at night. Getting in and out of bed became not only difficult but dangerous. I tried several things, but nothing worked. Finally, I began lying down on the edge of the bed; so that when I just had to get up, during the night, I could just roll off of the bed – fall to the floor - crawl to the nearest chair or counter to pull myself up - and then go do what I had to do. (By the way, Parkinson's makes you think that you need to get up more often than is really necessary.) One night I rolled out of bed, as usual; but as I fell to the floor, my neck got caught on the trashcan beside my bed. I was, literally, choking to death before I managed to pull myself free. That got me thinking, “If I keep getting out of bed this way, I won't last long.” That was when I first had the idea of a "standup bed". It took some doing, but I hooked a garage door opener to the headboard of my bed and nailed the foot of the bed to the floor. With a push of a button (and a rather loud noise), my bed would "standup" with me in it, so that I could walk out of bed and then walk back in. No more falls. It worked so well that I called my friend, Bobby Brown, in Lubbock, Texas. He has owned and operated several successful enterprises, so I wanted to see what he thought about my invention. He loved the idea. We became partners, and now - after 5 years of research and development, as well as a name change - the Transfer and Lift Control Unit (TLC Unit) is ready for the market place. (In fact, I have been using one of the earlier models of the TLC Unit for the last 3 years. It has made a real difference in the quality of my life.) Bobby Brown became the CEO and Owner of Transitions Industries, Inc., and I am one of the share holders. We look forward to you learning more about our vision for this unique product. |
